The LEGO videogame craze started with LEGO Star Wars, which surprised everyone with its mix of simple gameplay and family-appropriate humor. These games were fun to play on your own and even better when you got a buddy to tag along for the ride. But Star Wars wasn't the only franchise to get the LEGO treatment. Indiana Jones, Batman and even -- oddly enough -- Rock Band have also undergone the building block transformation.

Now J.K. Rowling's international sensation is going the way of the colored cubes with LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4. The game follows the story of the first four books (or perhaps, more accurately, the first four movies) and puts players in the familiar shoes of the wizard Harry Potter and his trusted friends. Players will wander the halls of Hogwarts, take classes to learn spells, and experience the LEGO version of things on their own or with a friend.

Regardless, my favorite part of the experience thus far was during the very first cutscene where Professor Dumbledore meets Professor McGonagall outside of Harry's home. As Harry Potter fans will know, Dumbledore traditionally speaks to a black cat outside, which turns out to be McGonagall in a transfigured state. But in LEGO Harry Potter, Dumbledore addresses the black cat as an annoyed McGonagall approaches him from behind. I really appreciate creative jokes like this that reference the movie, but don't expect to get a deeper understanding of the Harry Potter universe -- this game will not make sense to someone that hasn't read the books or seen the films.

When it comes to local multiplayer, LEGO Harry Potter does things very well. As was the case with LEGO Indiana Jones, Harry Potter features a dynamic split-screen system which elegantly divides the screen and changes the angle of the division depending on the location of the two players. I don't understand why more developers don't implement this type of split-screen in third-person adventure games, because it really is a beautiful system.

So far, LEGO Harry Potter is a very basic puzzle platformer set in the Harry Potter universe. It follows the same formula that the previous LEGO games did and it has the same lighthearted, clever humor. After spending a few hours with it, I was a little concerned with the confusing collectibles and occasionally unintelligible puzzles, but I really appreciated the split-screen mechanic. At the very least, Harry Potter fans will have another way of enjoying their beloved universe when the game hits retail on June 29th.
